Shipping Container Murals for Eastside Compost
The Eastside compost company sees owners Mike and MC collecting food scraps from residences in the neighborhood. They were looking to add some color and interest to their outdoor facility. In Lansing raccoons, known as “trash pandas”, are a staple of local wildlife and unofficial city mascots. The mural design feature two racoon friends cheersing apple cores amidst a background of neighborhood houses and streets – the racoons represent the congenial attitude of Mike and MC working together to make Lansing thrive. Two other sides of the container were painted with a repeated geometric pattern and a whimsical landscape. Channel 6 news story here.

“See the Beetles”
Lansing’s ArtPath was an annual outdoor juried art show run by the Lansing Art Gallery along the river trail, a paved pedestrian path. This work, “See the Beetles”, is a colorful homage to the beetles that share our world and how we perceive them. Beetles are varied, abundant, and perform many ecological functions but are often overlooked. The large hexagonal frames represent our view trying to see and categorize these creatures – as you move along the piece the beetles begin in a wild or natural dispersion and further along they are each captured in their own frame. The mural was created using cardboard stencils and spray-paint.

Six beetles found in Michigan are represented in this work. These beetles were chosen for their diversity of color and shape: ladybug (red, black, and white), banded net-winged beetle (orange and dark navy stripes), firefly (yellow, black, and red), green June bug (green and gold), six-spotted tiger beetle (greenish blue with white spots), and the stag beetle (black, brown, and purple).
Elementary School
Rainbow Fence Weaving
Lansing’s Pattengill Elementary school is sandwiched between two State Highways. A chain link fence separates the school’s lawn from the four lane trunk line. Community and school volunteers were brought together to activate this space by weaving rainbows through the fence wires. This work was made possible by a grant from the Art’s Council of Greater Lansing.

“Duck Duck Goose”
Larger than life mallard ducks and Canada geese were painted in various natural poses on the river trail path surface. Trail users could play a kind of “Duck, Duck, Goose Hopscotch” to interact with the paintings. This design also encouraged folks to make way for fellow waterfowl trail users who often crossed in this area. WKAR radio interview found here.
